Thanks to all the volunteer bike patrollers, safety on our bike network is greatly improving every day.
The rich history of Vélo-Services spans more than 29 years.
It was in 1989 that the first recreational trail patrols were carried out by three police officers on bicycles. This initiative was set up to respond to an excessively high crime rate on the 42 km of recreational trails. The three policemen are not enough for the task; they set up the patrol by volunteers.
In 1992, the police offered their support by recruiting 20 volunteer bicycle patrollers. The role of the volunteer patrol is not only to patrol the trails but also to provide mechanical / medical assistance and act as tourist agents.
We continue to develop the recreational trails, since 1995. The bike patrollers now have 52 km to cover.
Today, there are more than 405 km of cycling links to cover and more than 100 patrollers per year criss-crossing the Outaouais cycling network, much more than the 42 km of the first years.
That’s more than 405 km of cycling paths to cover in Gatineau.
